William 'Jack' Harrison Dempsey was born in Manassa, Colorado. He was one of eleven kids in the Dempsey family. The Dempsey family was very poor. He was a mix of Irish, Cherokee, and Jewish; he was the son of Celia Dempsey and Hyrum Dempsey. Dempsey was baptized in the LDS church on his 8th birthday. With frequent moves with the family they never really “grew up” in a single location; the family moved to where work was needed. Jack dropped out of elementary school and started to work to provide for his family. He left his family at the age of sixteen and traveled wherever, usually by sneaking on a train. He often fought for a small amount of money and then his legacy began.

Dempsey won the world title in 1919, keeping it until 1926, countless fights of his were historic, such as his fights against Georges Carpentier, Luis Firpo, and Tom Gibbons. Dempsey became a commonly known name, with him dating and marrying many actresses in his lifetime. Dempsey was monumental, along with other greats of his time such as Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Bill Tilden and Bobby Jones, boxing is one of the so-called Big Five of sports. Other important boxers included Benny Lynch and Panama Al Brown who was the first Hispanic to become a world champion. The sport’s popularity skyrocketed creating boxing superstars who transcended the sport and brought upon it a large audience.

While investigating my topic of violence in sports, I decided to start at the basics of how sports began, with the ancient olympics. The first Olympics consisted of the; Penthalon, a combination of running, jumping, and throwing; wrestling; boxing; pankraction; and equestrian events. Somewhat consists of violence and not a lot of rules. In Olympia, Greece these athletes performed to to showcase their own physical features and their talent. As well as pre outing peace and serenity between the cities in the area.
