There have been many dark times throughout the years but there is a time that some people may not even know about. This time involved a war that lasted from 1996 to 2001 and even inspired a movie called Blood Diamond. For a while people did not want to get involved with this war. All it took for people to demand action and end it were the events of 9/11. During the war, people were trying to get a hold of precious stones and for most of these people the hunt did not end well for them. This essay will have info based off the story the article Blood Diamonds written by Greg Campbell. I will be giving a brief summary of …show more content…
I hate to read about what the people had to go through because nobody should have to go through this and Campbell does shine some light into what these people had to go through. In the article Campbell wrote about how peoples hands were chopped off by RUF units band were then sent wandering hopelessly in order to spread the message of terror. He also wrote how so called peacekeepers were so inept in their defense of the civilians that that charges of human right violations were given against them as many times as the …show more content…
Now for this I am supposed to put in quotes to support my thesis but when I looked through the article, I did not find any relating to my topic so I am going to summarize sentences that support it. The tactic for the RUF was the amputation of civilians and people lost their legs, lips, and ears in the process. In Parrot’s Beak, some 50,000 refugees had died from starvation, disease, and war wounds in a region that was too hot for any humanitarian relief
“Friends,” one simple word that helped Russell Conwell, a baptist minister, captivate and motivate not hundreds but thousands of towns, cities, and villages for his speech Acres of Diamonds. By using inviting words and phrases, Conwell established a common familiarity with his audience. Similarly, Joel Osteen, a televangelist and multimillionaire of the 21st century gives weekly sermons that receive up to 7 million viewers. “We love you,” is a phrase that Osteen uses to attract and give a home-like feel to his audience. Although Conwell’s speech and Osteen’s sermons are almost a century apart, they portray the same message: any person is capable of success if they have the right mindset and work ethic. While both preachers are extremely
Deep in the Alps lies a small town called Clay. The sun was rising over a frosty blue mountain, and drops of dew dripped down from the leaves in the valley. Arthur awoke to find his bedroom filled with light. He went downstairs and drank a glass of water, not hungry enough for food. Arthur went outside into the chilly morning and started walking down the road. The road was lined with hundreds of huge alpine trees. A large flock of birds flew over Arthur’s head in the sky.
When one is on the other side of the earth, there is only so much information that a person could obtain. This was a great enough reason for the author, Greg Campbell, of "Blood Diamonds" to expose what all eyes are not seeing and what many are blind to in this world. Campbell went out to research the tracks and origins of a very valuable stone known as the diamond. In doing so, he urges to research the origins and life of this precious rock. He goes about researching just exactly how the life of the diamond begins in the jungles of Sierra Leone and ends up in the London on its market. This is what could be said to be the ultimate reason for this book "Blood Diamond”. Evidently, Campbell wanted to expose or let it be known how African
These are the stories that need to be told to the American public by the soldiers who experienced them first hand. Sadly these stories only come out in books and novels and are often deemed as “true stories that never happened,” as seen in Tim O’Brien’s work. There is a clear reason for this.

In this chapter, Jared Diamond recalls the greatest collision in modern history. Atahualpa’s, Incan emperor, capture by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro was known as the biggest population shift in modern history. When he Europeans colonized the Americas, Native Americans were nearly wiped out as the biggest population shift occurred. As Diamond depicts the story, he includes eyewitness writings to describe the fight at Cajamarca. The Spaniards were able to win the fight due to weapons, and not to anything other considering they had fewer soldiers than the Incans. Steel swords and chainmail armor played a colossal part in the defeat of Native Americans. The sight of horses confused many Native Americans, as they had never seen one. The
All you can see in this story is the cruelty of war, and that there is nothing stopping the soldiers from causing such atrocities. We can see that by the fact that all they had to do was call for an airstrike and there were no restraints stopping them from doing so. Another quote from O’Brien is “If at the
And all the Civilians could do was watch in horror as their homes and belongings were burned by incendiary bullets or blown to bits by bombs. The amount of people being rushed to the Hospital was to overwhelming and there weren't enough Nurses and supplies to tend to all of the men and women which led to many of the Hospitalised people death .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vpbt0Cxze60
The notion of East to West success opposed to the North South failure of several nations I find to be astonishing. The way that he is able to break it down scientifically and shows the failure of the Voortrekkers began once they passed the tropic of Capricorn and entered the tropics of Africa. This exposed them to the germs of the tropics that they have never experienced before, and for the first time putting the people of Eurasia at a geographic disadvantage. This point is extremely significant to Diamonds theory, as it demonstrates the importance of geography and how “germs” are the most dangerous and uncontrollable weapon that still remain today to be a crucial struggle for regions. This demonstrates the vital role that geography
A biologist in training, a specialist in human physiology, and a professor at UCLA in Los Angeles are only one of the many occupations Jared Diamond, writer of the “Guns, Germs, and Steel” book has. Diamond is the leading expert on the bird life on the island of Papua New Guinea where he would travel regularly, he travelled to Papua New Guinea when he was twenty-six years old, his real passion had always been the study of birds. More than thirty years ago, Diamond was asked by a man called Yali, “why you white men have so much cargo, and we New Guineans have so little?” That made Diamond critically think. He went on a journey that took him nearly thirty years to find reasons what is it dividing the humans from rich to poor and as to why Europeans
Imagine being a pirate. You haven’t had a bath for months from being out on the vast sea. You and the crew raid ships carrying rum, tobacco, food, and diamonds. You get into deadly battles with other ships. This is the life of the crewmen sailing on the Bloody Diamond along with their captain, the fiercest female pirate of them all, Syrena.
The main idea of this article was that ISIS ( an extremest group ) made an attack on Kobani, a city in Syria. It was the second largest massacre, preformed by ISIS. There has also been fighting between ISIS and YPG ( Kurdish security forces ) in Kobani. On Thursday, ISIS militants disguised themselves as YPG and killed one-hundred and forty civilians. They also injured more than 200 people in Kobani. In the west region of the city on Friday, YGP formed a blockage around the Euphrates river. This blocked ISIS militants from crossing it to go home to their villages. I made connections to different places and tribes.
Not only does this issue involve the politics of the diamond trade and the involvement of outside parties, but it is also a devastatingly serious human rights violation to the civilians of Angola. “There is an average of 52 land mine incidents per month and approximately 1 out of every 356 Angolans is an amputee as a result of these bloody conquests”[4]. It was determined in a United Nations Security Council meeting that “there are clear and major weaknesses in systems for controlling diamond trading, which no single country can address effectively because of the many alternative routes available to illicit diamond traders”[5]. Therefore, in order to combat the civil fighting between UNITA and the MPLA, we must educate ourselves about UNITA’s diamond trade, prohibit the sale of blood diamonds, and achieve a commitment from diamond dealers that their diamonds originate from conflict-free mines.
The film marker is trying to raise awareness of the illicit conflict diamond trade and reinforcing the Kimberley process1 and showing how it will stem the flow of conflict diamonds. This is successful mainly due to the public outburst after the movie. The great impact of the movie has caused diamond
