The criminal justice system approaches young offenders through unique policies to address the challenges of dealing with juvenile offending. They take special care when dealing with juveniles in order to stop them from repeat offending and stop any potential bad behaviour which could result in future. Juveniles have the highest tendency to rehabilitate and most adopt law-abiding lifestyles as they mature. If children and young people come into contact with the criminal justice system, it usually through interaction with a police officer when being arrested or questions about some matter. Seventy eight per cent of the 843 children and young people surveyed said that the police rarely treated young people with sufficient respect. It could be argued that children and young people l on the whole do not have good relationship with the police. Young
There are many similarities and differences between the adult and juvenile justice systems. Although juvenile crimes have increased in violence and intensity in the last decade, there is still enough difference between the two legal proceedings, and the behaviors themselves, to keep the systems separated. There is room for changes in each structure. However, we cannot treat/punish juvenile offenders the way we do adult offenders, and vice versa. This much we know. So we have to find a way to merge between the two. And, let’s face it; our juveniles are more important to us in the justice system. They are the group at they
Before we explore the roles and responsibilities of a Juvenile Probation Officer we first must explore the juvenile justice system itself as well as to why it was set in place. In the United States, juveniles that fell into trouble with the law were automatically treated different from adults. Before the juvenile courts were established, children under the age of 7 were never really held responsible for their criminal acts. The law considered them unable to commit any criminal intent, however this could be disproved if the child knew that the act he or she was committing was a crime or that it would cause harm to another
Everyone wants respect and inmates look for respect. A lot of the complaints I have seen from inmates is that the officers disrespected them. They feel that the officer does not need to yell, ?get in their face?, and do complete strip searches all the time. IF inmates are treated with a little respect it goes a long way in an inmate being either a ?model or a disruptive? prisoner. It also helps in the
I asked Officer Lewis; what are some qualities you believe are necessary to be in the criminal justice system? He asked for a minute to think and narrow down which out of the many were the most important. After a minute of thinking he finally had the answer he explained that there were many qualities that were needed to be in any part of the criminal justice program but there were a few that were essential. First he said, if you’re looking into this field it is important that you’re even tempered with people and be willing to let things slide without getting offended. Next he said its important to have a sense of humor because you will be put into stressful situations everyday and its important you have a good laugh every now and then. The final quality he said was the most important of them all; common sense. The special characteristic that the juvenile officer have is communication skills to be able to talk to the victims, the people they work with, witness and the juvenile that did the crime. Critical-thinking skills this skill that the juvenile officers have is needed to figure out what really happen after he gets all the information for the witnesses and the victim. Decision-making skill this skill is well needed by the juvenile officers the reason why is when they are radioed for a criminal act he or she can make a decision to take the person to jail or let him off with a warning like for an example if the juvenile kills or do a robbery the officers automatic decision to arrest the juvenile and put him or her behind bars till they go before a judge to either get bong or no bond and get their jail time if they are getting any. The reason for the arrest is for the safety of the citizen and to stop the criminal form to another criminal act. As we know, probation and parole officers play a major role in shaping an offenders perception of reality as well as changing their behavior. The question that many will ask is “is the role of the PO that of a social worker or cop?” In my opinion, probation and parole officers have a huge weight on their shoulders due to the caseloads that they receive. Since the recent police brutality cases the mentality of an officer needs to change with the times. I believe that officers should lean more towards being a social worker/cop because they should be able to gain common ground with citizens while keeping their best interest and public safety at heart. In short, officers have to play multiple roles depending upon the situation and the stipulations
In my own opinion, I consider juveniles as immature because they lack the ability to recognize the long term impact of their actions as they have decreased levels of responsibility. Therefore, the justice system should not charge juveniles in adult legal system and sentence them as adults.Trying juveniles as adults exposes the young offenders to state penitentiaries up to life in prison without parole and even sentenced to death. This raises a question on how truly effective treating juveniles as adults are to the young offenders. As the crimes committed by juveniles increase, there has been an outcry from the public and affected to prosecute juveniles accused of serious crimes as adults. It is true that juveniles do
In most states, public safety and whether or not the needs of the juvenile defendant will
For starters, contact with a police officer often is a young person 's introduction to the juvenile justice system police account for most referrals to juvenile court. Law enforcement 's role with boys and girls under the age of eighteen is challenging because there are laws that federally protect youth that commit serious crimes and attempts to aid them in a road to recovery to return to their communities. Police officers generally summon young offenders to the police department 's juvenile division to question them and if necessary, confine them. At the time of an arrest, officers decide whether to refer young offenders to juvenile court or to send the case to the justice system.
The Juvenile System has been around for a long time. The primary reason behind separating Juvenile from adult criminals is quite simple; the judicial system believes that the children are less culpable for their irresponsive behavior and they could easily be reformed as compared to adult offenders. The crucial role of the judicial system is to critically investigate, diagnose, and recommend treatments for the Juveniles rather than accrediting them. However, because of the increasing number of juvenile arrest for crimes committed by persons considered as a child, the attention that the given to a crime involving juveniles, the decreasing trust to the juvenile system itself and the lauder roar of the society for a safer place to live in,
