Born in 163 BC, Xin Zhui, also known as Marquise of Dai or Lady Dai, was the wife of Li Cang, the Marquis of Dai, during the Han Dynasty. She gained fame 2000 years after her death when her tomb was discovered inside a hill named Mawangdui in Changsha, Hunan, China. After opening the tomb, archeologists discovered her perfectly preserved body, swaddled in more than 20 layers of silk and then sealed within four coffins packed with charcoal and clay, making it airtight so bacteria couldn’t enter. Her skin was still moist and elastic, her joints still flexible, every feature still remained intact down to her eyelashes and the hair in her nostrils, and blood still remained in her veins. Lady Dai’s tomb was a massive inverted pyramid over 12 meters …show more content…
Unity was crucial for survival and that lesson was not only learned, but remembered by future generations. The basic act of volunteerism led to the well documentation of philanthropy in America. The first volunteer firehouse was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1736. The tradition still continues today where towns and cities have volunteer fire departments that make huge differences in the community. In the 1830s, young people were inspired by religious rejuvenations during the Great Awakening to get involved with outreach work through various religious organizations. Relief programs were ran by local churches to help the homeless and victims of crisis, thus, the creation of the YMCA, The American Red Cross and the United Way. The 20th century is where mainstream volunteer organizations began to flourish compared to the assignments organized by churches in the 18th and 19th century like the Rotary club, Lions Club and Kiwanis. The soup kitchen was most likely created during the Great depression when the country experienced an overwhelming need for food and shelter. Support groups were available for servicemen and civilians were during World War II while a different kind of war was focused in the 1960s such as a liberal one against poverty, inequality and violence around the world. Organizations just started to multiply across every region in the nation to give others the chance to a better life. The causes of the the 21st century include green living, animal welfare and equal rights regardless of race, gender and sexual orientation. It is a great era to live in as many are devoting time and energy toward improving the welfare of those around
I love the idea of providing students with a variety of opportunities that would satisfy each student's needs. Whether its research, volunteering and community service, it all is provided here. The curriculum also allows for a great amount of flexibility enabling students to pursue these other interest that would make them very competitive for residencies. I have a great interest in practicing in underserved communities upon graduation, therefore every opportunity I get to volunteer in clinics and shadow physician in underserved regions is something I look forward to here at Western University of Health Sciences. Likewise, the diverse student body is great as each student come from various backgrounds and have unique experiences all of which
When the f-5 tornado decimated the town of Smithville on April 27, 2011, a whopping 15 people were killed, 40 people injured, 18 homes destroyed, and two businesses were annihilated. (National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office) Without the help of various organizations, like the Salvation Army, Smithville would’ve never recovered from the horrifying disaster, which made me wonder what the Salvation Army does, what a volunteer needs to do, and what the benefits are of a volunteer.
The reason that I believe that volunteer work and work in general is vital to success in the today’s world and society is because the generation that I am apart of is lack of a better term lazy. The motto of the entitled generation is procrastination is key. The most important part in forming a generation comes from the parents. The outcome of a generation’s attitude always leads back to the source (the parents). Volunteer work in present time is very important for the youth, but is equally as important for adults too. Some local organizations in Juneau are Love Incorporation, Helping Hands-Healing Hands LLC, Saint Vincent De Paul, and Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC). It is a non profit organization that provides health care for residents of Southeast Alaska. Saint Vincent De Paul is an organization that provides housing for low income families in Juneau, Alaska. Service is an essential
It all started back in 1929, the depression era. The stock market had recently crashed and people were desperate for hope. Unemployment was at its all time high, more than one fourth of the U.S population was unemployed and gradually increasing. At the time of when the depression first began, President Herbert Hoover was in power. During the depression people would wait in long lines just for a few bites to eat. Volunteers would hand out food to the hopeless and hungry people, these were commonly known as Soup kitchens in “Hoovervilles” . The soup kitchens and the help efforts that were in place during the depression were named after the president of the time. The struggles did not get any better until the start of the CCC, The Civilian Conservation Corp.
Volunteerism continued to grow as the years passed. In the 1960’s volunteers turned out in great numbers. Many of the volunteers were answering the call from President Kennedy to join the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps encouraged citizens to work towards world peace and friendship. This could be achieved through
57). Before the Great Depression of the thirties, the popular opinion was that the federal government should not be heavily involved in providing social welfare. However, the urbanization and industrialization of the early twentieth century, as well as the economic pressure of the 1930s, proved to be more than what state and local governments or private organizations could provide for. These pressures gave way for President Franklin D. Roosevelt to lead America into the New Deal. This included the creation of the U.S. Social Security Program, unemployment assistance, and needs-tested assistance (Salamon 1999, p.58). Roosevelt’s New Deal still left limited coverage, limited funding, and left much of the delivery of social service to state and local governments. Even with all the changes that have occurred in federal programs and policy over the years, Salamon shows that combined state and local governments continued to nearly match the amount of federal spending from 1950 through 1994 (p.59). This again reflects the tension and nature of the American system, which was intended to lean on the strength of the public to innovate and provide for itself. The debate over the amount of government involvement in providing assistance for Americans is still a very important issue as it relates to the role of nonprofit organizations in American society.
The Qin Dynasty, under its first ruler, Qin Shi Huang di, would unite China as a single entity for the first time. His rule, which lasted from 221BC to 210BC, would bring together various warring factions under a single imperial authority. In doing so, this imperial authority would also attribute to itself an incredible degree of divine importance as perhaps is best demonstrated by the tomb constructed in his honor. The Qin Dynasty is remarkable for the ego and ambition of its emperor. Qin Shi Huang di may be demonstrated as a man of unparalleled conceit, with the extent of artifact evidence notable at his burial site standing in direct competition with that of any pharaoh or European king. That Qin was the first ruler to unify the parameters of what is now modern China, it may not be seen as so unreasonable that much of the artwork notable from his time was that which was built in tribute to him. Indeed, the beginnings of the Great Wall of China would come about in this time, and would be as much a testament to the remarkable vanity of Qin's ambitions as to the strategic justification for the erection of the enormous structure. However, the Tomb of Qin Shi Huang Di, contrary to the security-induced Great Wall, remains shrouded in mystery even to the present day. The plans behind its construction, the incredible detail and the sheer cruelty of what is implied by its many chambers give continued life to archeological speculation.
In 1878, the organization called “The Salvation Army” first arrived in the United States located in Pennsylvania. As the Great Depression hit in
Wealthy Chinese individuals had for a long time been buried in fashions reminiscent of Egyptians and Etruscans; accompanied by everything they would require for a comfortable life beyond death. Lady Hao’s tomb, dating from the Shang Dynasty a millennia earlier, is one of the best surviving examples of this. Qin Shi Huangdi, indeed, would have a city complete with thousands of individuals—some terracotta and some real buried dead—to accompany him in
“Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together” (Ryan). These words said by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, reflects the words my parents would always say to me when I was little. I would donate old clothes that did not fit, or toys I did not play with anymore. Every summer I would volunteer at my town’s public library, as well as at my church. However, as I got older, doing the simple tasks at the library felt tedious and uninteresting so I stopped volunteering for a while. There were times when I had spare time that could have and should have been put to use volunteering, but I did not have the motivation. However, after being inducted into my High School’s National Honors Society, I needed volunteer hours in order to remain in it. This was the motivation I needed to begin volunteering again.
emerging social and human problems due to the government did not have adequate resources (Norris-Tirrell, 2014, pp.306). As the population of the United States continued to grow the needs for human services increased and changed the expectations for the nonprofits (Norris-Tirrell, 2014, pp.307). This happened during the era of industrialization that followed the Civil War through the great depression that began in the 1920s (Norris-Tirrell, 2014, pp.307-308).
Volunteering is not a new subject now, but people did not perceive it before because as time goes by, volunteering is becoming more and more popular since each year more people volunteer. Volunteering began around the early 19th century since America was experimenting with the Great Awakening. The Great Awakening was a period in which
I grew up in a home where volunteering was a fact of life. My dad was a member of
Pynes (2013) states “the public sector relies on volunteers for an assortment of purposes and in a variety of environments.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 64.3 million Americans volunteered at least once between September 2010 and September 2011. (2013, p. 377-378). As a State of Florida employee, this organization depends heavily on a volunteer to accomplish our mission, vision, and value of the community; a vision to become the healthiest State in the Nation, which takes many hands and feet which volunteer help to meet this. I am not unacquainted with these two volunteer programs “Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful” and “Meals on Wheels of Tampa “. What are the strengths and weaknesses of these programs? What are the challenges these volunteer programs are facing the types of services they provide? And, which organization is liable to have a successful program and what would I recommend improving the other organization achievement.
A remarkable thing about humankind is the common theme of helping others that occurs almost as frequently as people in need themselves appear. The problem lately in society is that the percentage of those people in need has been steadily rising; it is harder and harder for folks to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and provide for them and their family. This is the reason that many organizations are formed. Charity and giving can often be distinguished in a description, but it is the inherent good that comes out of those that is much harder to define. For example, the intentions of any specific organization are almost impossible to determine, so one cannot conclude absolutely on whether it is doing good or bad in the world. While one
