Society has created it’s government around systems from older civilizations,( in particular western civilizations). The great European thinkers Plato and Aristotle have influenced minds such as Karl Marx. Karl Marx is most famous in creating the ideas of Communism and Capitalism. Writings such as Marx’s El Manifiesto Comunista(The Communist Manifesto) have influenced nations in contemporary political times. The United States is a democratic republic capitalistic society. America is comprised of many ethnicities and beliefs. Metaphorically speaking America is a Zoo.
A zoo is very diverse in habitats and ecology. The animal species population of zoos are varied and diverse in order to attract visitors. Large zoos located in larger metropolitan cities which usually have exhibits from different continents on the planet. “1,000 large animal collections are opened to the public-80% of them are in major cities.”(Kidszone). The United States is a nation comprised of diverse ethnic heritages. Immigration and ethnic diaspora has brought a variety of people and their cultures to the continent of North America. The study of animals is called Zoology. In zoology animals are studies biologically and behaviorally. This is similar do humans who are studied Anatomically, and through sociology and psychology. Ethnologically speaking, the relationship between America’s citizens is similar to that of the zoo and its animals. For instance, a zoo is located in a city. That city already has
As the animal rights movement has developed and grown substantially in recent years, there has been an increased focused on the welfare of captive animals. A popular institution that has received much attention for keeping animals captive is the zoo. Because of this focus, zoos have responded by publicizing their positive benefits for existence in order to justify keeping these animals on display. Since the term “zoo” can have a wide variety of meaning and characteristics, it is important to define what constitutes a zoo in this essay. Zoos are defined as a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public, and
Zoos are where animals are kept for people entertainment or for studies. Animals are kept in zoos and aquariums
THESIS: Within the 10,000 zoos in America, hundred, 214 to be exact, have and continue to gain accreditation to become a public animal advocacy to protect and maintain animal species for years to come and through their efforts, they can better educate the civilians who enjoy visiting such attractions.
Animals kept in zoos has always been a controversial decision. Zoos have been around for 4,000 years. Many people argue about the impact a zoo has on an animal and the world. According to the article, ”Zoos: The Historical Debate”, “Some people argue that zoos play an important role in conservation of endangered animals, others say that zoos do more harm than good.” I believe that zoos play an important role in conservation. They also educate us about animals. Finally, zoos entertain us in many ways. In my opinion, zoos impact the world in a good way.
Zoos present a certain blend of nature and culture. They have always provided a way to bring natural wildlife and urban Americans together as a means of entertainment. Yet, throughout the years the role of zoos have changed. Though once used for amusement, zoos are now being used for education on preservation and the welfare of endangered species. One may wonder where and how the idea of zoos started and just how they, and the environment around them, have changed throughout history.
What was at one time used to show off wealth and power is now seen as a symbol of sadness and disgust, despite the many minds it blesses with wonder (Adwait- Kulkarni). Today there are huge controversies over Zoos and whether they are inhumane or not. There are also controversies about the United States of America and other countries. Many comparisons can be drawn between a Zoo and American culture. We go out to look at animals that are trapped in a place they have no control of, but could we really be looking at ourselves?
In the past, there have been many reports of zoo accidents, to be specific; over 200 zoo accidents in the last 26 years have occurred. From my perspective zoos should be prohibited, taking innocent animals from the wild and holding them captive for display at zoos is cruel. There has been a bulk amount of controversy over the topic of zoo mishaps and whose fault is to blame for the occurrence. In all fairness, nobody should be blamed, but there should be a change or new regulations to guide zoos in a more prominent direction. Because in the end, if there is no difference in the zoo, then tragic events like this will continue to happen. There are various amounts of precautions that can be taken by zoo corporations to prevent zoo accidents;
In Europe, a visit to the zoo was an expression of wealth. The European zoo provided a novel atmosphere for socializing and an upscale, refined form of recreation, further reinforcing that the European Zoo was for the upper class. A stark contrast, the American zoo, though attracting a diverse audience, has always been a middle class institution. New World zoos provided the opportunity for a diverse population to enjoy a balance of amusement and learning. Patrons of all classes were invited to engage in education and amusement along side of recreation, not experienced in everyday
Today many forms of societies exist. A society is a group of people that exist together in some form of community. All over the world at the present time many different societies exist. Nearly all societies contain systems of government, justice forming or authoritative powers to lead and shape its members. In western cultures around the world such as here in Australia systems on democracy are set up. These systems match the ideologies and social
Zoos are many things. It can be a place for family fun and a good place to visit over the weekend, yet there are so many things going on inside zoos that the public fails to notice. For example, the article “10 Facts about Zoos” by CAPS discusses the lack of enclosure space and states, “Tigers and lions have around 18,000 times less space in zoos than they would in the wild. Polar bears have one million times less space.” This reveals that animals in zoos are placed in enclosures that are way too small for them and not even remotely close to what they experience in the wild. “Elephants are used to roaming miles upon miles a day in large groups, yet in zoos they
The ideas during the Ancient Greek civilization greatly impacted the U.S. government. One concept that influenced the U.S. government the most was the Athenian Democracy. Democracy was originated in the word demokratia, which means rule by the people, and this political system
Every society has one thing in common; there downfall. Usually, the cause of the downfall is rebellion from the people. In America, thanks to our democracy we have a multitude of rights. We can choose what we want to do with our lives. That is why we are united so peacefully. We are free.
Background Info: Zoos in American have changed a lot over the years, but they have not made the full transition to where they should be yet.
One of the ways a person can appreciate nature is by going to a zoo. In a zoo, anyone can go look at a variety of animals and birds that exist in the world that they normally would not be able to see. A zoo contains various exotic animals from all over the world. For example, the Henry Doorly Zoo contains monkeys from South America, elephants from Africa, and penguins from Antarctica. Instead of flying all over the world to see these remarkable creatures, they are all centralized for people to look at up close and personal. The zoo is a place for people to truly appreciate nature and all of the animals that we share this world with.
Thesis Statement: In 1934, when Brookfield Zoo was introduced by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, it attracted many people due its title as, "the first zoo to be educational" for its visitors. Since its beginning, Brookfield Zoo gave children and adults the opportunity to gain more intelligence on how important it is to care for animals and their environment. In order to make sure their visitors get this knowledge, Brookfield constructed programs, classes, and tours that would be enjoyably edifying for all. It would allow those people to disperse the word of educational zoos to impact other zoos worldwide so they too can offer their visitors an opening at enlightenment about wildlife.
