Patriot Cultural Assignment
“The Patriot” is an excellent movie. It may very well be one of the most exciting
and moving war-drama movies of all time. There are very few films today that even come
close to touching upon the American Revolution, which is why “The Patriot” is of such
importance. Nonetheless, during the film the actual American Revolution takes a back
seat and allows the center of the story to revolve around Benjamin Martin (played by
Mel Gibson) and his South Carolina family. Some examples of this would be the focus on
Benjamin’s eldest son Gabriel and how he goes against his father’s wishes. As well as
Gabriel, the film focuses on Benjamin and what actions he takes and why.

This fuels the fire for Gabriel and makes him more
determined to fight and seek revenge.
After the focus is off of Gabriel it is shifted to Benjamin. Since he remembers his
own bloody experience from the French & Indian War, Benjamin is reluctant to have any
part of this conflict. At first, Benjamin tries to convince others to resolve this peacefully
and not to fight. He refuses to fight because he would rather care for his family and
remain to farm with his slaves. Soon after this, Benjamin joins the fight himself, his loyalty
to his eldest son first draws him into the fight. After his son is captured and is almost
killed by the British Benjamin fights to save his son. Later, Benjamin becomes a bloody
British killing machine out to give meaning to as well as revenge for the unjustly death of
one of his younger sons. Benjamin and his families motivation for war does seem
historically correct. Any family will fight when its for the right cause and right reason.
Throughout to course of the movie there were a few inaccurate historical facts
that were brought to my attention that the average movie watcher may or may not have
noticed. The main characters were not based on real combat soldiers from the American
Revolution. There really were members of the British army who wanted to bring death to
all Americans like General
As Benjamin transition out of adolescent, he constantly struggles with the decision regarding his future and to find the best way of becoming a man. Ironically, it is his relationship with Mrs. Robinson that helps Benjamin transformation
Have you ever seen “The Patriot”? If you have do you know the truth behind it because some parts really happened and some parts didn’t. Meaning that “The Patriot” is somewhat historically accurate. The Patriot is somewhat historically accurate because the main character Benjamin Martin was not a real person he was based on Francis Marion, the Battle of Cowpens was exactly the same because the colonist had extra help to fight off the British, and the surrender of Colonel Cornwallis was somewhat alike because his army could not get around the French and the colonist in history and in the movie. So “The Patriot” has many differences and similarities to history.
When he was working for his brother, Benjamin was the apprentice of booksellers. While working for his brother all he really was giving to eat and drink was often only had a glass of water, handful of raisin and a slice of bread to eat.
The movie, The Patriot, is the story of a South Carolina plantation owner, Benjamin Martin, who leads a local militia against British troops in the South during the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Martin, who is a widower with six children and a veteran of the French and Indian War, wants nothing to do with the war until a brutal British Colonel, William Tavington, kills one of his sons and takes his eldest son, a member of the Continental Army, prisoner. Martin, who’s character is loosely based on Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, uses guerrilla warfare to cut British supply lines and attack outposts in an attempt to slow General
The “Patriot” takes place in South Carolina in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. It is a story about a widowed father of seven, named Benjamin Martin. Benjamin was involved in the French and Indian War before marrying and starting a family. He is reluctant to join the conflict as he remembers too well his own experience in the earlier French and Indian War. After his wife passed away he does everything to keep his family together and away from war. He is a patriot who wants no part in a war with Britain.
The story began with Benjamin’s return to his hometown. The member of the family were introduced one by one. It was also revealed that the situation between the Continental army and the Great Britain government is getting more complicated each days, as the town’s people were being forced to choose side for the
In return, all James did was slander Benjamin’s name throughout the community so he wouldn’t be able to find work anywhere else. This was a big challenge for Benjamin because not only did he have a bad name that lasted quite a long time but he also had to force himself to move to distant places like New York and Pennsylvania. He had to travel under dangerous conditions across seas to find another job. Also another challenge Benjamin faced after leaving his fathers job, was that he couldn’t find a long stable and suitable job for himself. He always faced problems at every new job he joined. On his way to New York, Benjamin meets Bradford, who was not able to offer him any jobs. But he refers Benjamin to his son Andrew who was a printer in Pennsylvania. When Benjamin gets to Pennsylvania, Andrew did not have a job to offer him. Then Andrew refers him to go work for Keimer, who is also another printer. Although Keimer gave Benjamin work, but it doesn’t last long. He later stops living with Keimer and ends up leaving the job. From these events in his life we are able to see the cycle and pattern, and he might face similar challenges in the future. Benjamin gets pushed around from places to places to find a jobs with very few people recognizing his ability and passion to write, and how much of an intellectual, he was. He wasn’t able to save up his money due
Movies are made to be sold and not history to be perfectly told. If movies include a complete history, it wouldn't be known as a movie anymore. However, it would be called a documentary, which most people get fed up of. So interpretations, exaggerations and idealistic scenes are added to the movie to make it more interesting for the audience. "The Patriot" is a similar film made during the modern day time about a time period in which none of the experienced the real revolution. Politically, socially, and culturally, "The Patriot" attempts to give a sense of the scope of aspects involved in the American Revolution. Despite succeeding in this regard, it still lacks details that reveal the true complexity of the mixed sentiments present in
Ben’s Purpose in the Drama (Consider how his appearances give meaning to the drama as a foil* to Willy.)
Ashamed of his brutality during the French Indian War, Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) a widower stays on his homestead with his seven children in South Carolina vowing to live a peaceful life. When it is decided that South Carolina will join the fight Benjamin 's eldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) enlists without permission. Even though he argues against it, he lets Gabriel go. Did you know people do not think if the story from history movie is a truly based on real history or filled with fiction? Almost every history movie contains some kind of fiction in it to make it a great story and to keep the audience's entertained. For example, the movie called “The Patriot” which was the American Revolution had happen. The movie has some historical accuracy but there are some historical inaccuracies also.
In the two films The Patriot, and 1776, there were some similarities and there were differences. Some of the similarities and differences had to do with the setting and the time period it was in. Also in the films the some of the characters shared the same traits, the wars in the movies in the movies were also different like in The Patriot it had a lot to do with war but in the 1776 movie it had to do with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. They both both share the one important thing America’s independence.
Historic movies are often produced with the premise that they will tell an honest tale about the past, but how accurate are they really? The Patriot is a historical movie the shows the life of an ex-war hero, Benjamin Martin, and his life continuing on through the American Revolution. This includes his interaction with the soldiers and generals, his political stance, and his involvement through the towns. Because the Benjamin Martin is fictional The Patriot cannot be called 100% accurate, but that doesn't mean that other aspects shown were inaccurate. The Patriot demonstrates authentic knowledge of history militarily, socially, and politically.
Now in the literary story Benjamin has a grandfather who at the start was antagonized, became to enjoy his grandson’s company. It is a brief account of his grandfather but a meaningful one as this was the first one who gave him a sense of acceptance. The film version gave him acceptance through Queenie and we never get to know a grandfather; though one could say the patrons at the old folk’s home could have been grandparent surrogates for Benjamin. The patrons at the old folks home taught him many things but his experience living there taught him not to fear death and what loss was about which, in a sense, desensitized the character so that when Queenie passes he is not visibly upset.
