Is Texting and Driving as bad as Drinking and Driving? Amber King Zane State College There are many dangers when both drinking while driving and texting while driving. In this essay the two will be compared and contrasted to find why people do them even with the dangerous consequences. Drivers think they can text while driving and also drink while driving because they think they can get away with it because nothing has affected them in the past while doing it. Michael Austin states, “Texting, also known as SMS (for short message service), is on the rise, up from 9.8 billion messages a month in December ’05 to 110.4 billion in December ’08”. There may be more than one reason why people feel like it is okay to drink in drive. One of those reasons may be that they are so impaired that they aren’t aware of the dangers of getting behind the wheel. In some situations a driver could get pulled over by a police officer and he would give a breathalyzer test that the driver would most likely fail. Then the driver would be taken away to jail in hand cuffs and treated like a criminal. Another reason is that the driver feels as if they can drink as much as they would like and still be able to drive because they have done it in the past. Also drivers don’t want to feel intimidated by the alcohol in their system; they believe they are still capable of doing the same things they did when they weren’t under the influence. After you’re put in jail you will have to face a judge or jury and depending on your alcohol level you’ll be sentenced. If it’s okay to drink and drive, is it okay to text and drive? Neither option is okay. But people feel as if texting and driving is a lot more minor then drinking in driving. Drivers look at driving as a dangerous thing already and most think adding alcohol to the equation makes it more dangerous. But is it worse than drinking and driving? Teenagers and adults don’t think so. Drivers feel as if they can hide their phone when they are texting or talking on it and the
Every day there are many that are killed from texting and driving. So many people get injured or even killed because of texting and driving. Several people are addicted to their phones, especially teens. Teens are obsessed with their phones, they are always waiting for some to text them back. Texting and driving is a distraction that everyone should avoid because it can result in injury or death to oneself or others. This may result in property damage, and the probability for one to receive legal consequences.
Texting and driving was and continues to be one of the major factors of car accidents in America’s population. In the following advertisement named, “Phone in one hand, Ticket in the other” it is noted that texting and driving are frowned upon in our society, and the authorities are giving citizens tickets for texting and driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had created and promoted this ad to help decrease car accidents involving texting and driving, by informing the reader, you will be ticketed if you are caught being on your phone while driving a vehicle. The ad was first campaigned April 2015 by NHTSA. There are two messages being portrayed in this advertisement. First, the text of the ad, gets the audience thinking about two possible consequences of texting and driving. Secondly, the images demonstrate what may take place if you are using a cell phone while on the road. Lastly, both the text and images work together to get the message across that if you are caught texting and driving, you will be ticketed, and the use of a cellular device while driving can lead to a car accident. The, “Phone in one hand, Ticket in the other” ad successfully portrays its reasoning for being invented, and I believe the presence of this ad will decrease the amounts of accidents in America.
“Text messaging … had the longest duration of eyes-off-road time of 4.6 seconds at a six second interval. This equates to a driver traveling the length of a football field at 55 miles per hour without looking at the roadway.” This statement was made by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute when they did a texting while driving study (“Skip Menu”). Texting while driving has become a large problem in the United States and it is growing. There are about 1,600,000 accidents per year as a result of texting while driving. Texting while driving has become a bigger problem for teenagers than drinking while intoxicated. In an article Delthia Ricks wrote for Newsday, she says:
The most dangerous between texting while driving and driving under the influence is texting while driving. From 2002 to 2011, driving while intoxicated numbers went down and texting while driving numbers went up (Oberman). Texting while operating a vehicle raises the risk eight times higher to cause a wreck. If people choose drinking and driving, it raises the risk four times higher to cause a wreck (Driving). When people drive out on the roads doing either drinking while driving or texting while driving, a crash could occur at any time. People texting and driving makes themselves take their eyes off the road longer because people focus on the message received and try to think of what the response message will say. Drunk drivers usually tend to speed up or slow down, while texters tend to swerve across the centerline (Texting). A person
Ever wonder how your life would be if you killed someone while driving and texting? Think of it this way, it could be your friend, your child, someone you love with all of your heart or even you. How would this affect you, your family or the family of someone else you could easily hurt? During this essay I will persuade you why Idaho should enact Legislation which prohibits texting while driving with statistics, facts and my own personal experience.
Have you ever lost a close friend or family member from them texting and driving or someone else texting and driving? I am sure you have been one to text and drive also as much as we hate to admit it. Would you want to be the one who killed yourself or someone just because of that one text? I have personally known two young girls who have been killed from texting and driving. Both were on the same road exactly five months apart. Here is why I believe every state needs a no texting and driving law to ensure that our roads are safe from those individuals who insist on texting while driving.
The reason why I agree with the “City Council is because that’s how people get hurt not just you but other people to. Let me tell you about what I mean”. So say if your driving or somebody else driving and there texting and trying to drive at the same time and they looked up to late to see that truck or vehicle coming then boom y’all “crash”. You might be dead or the next person might be dead. Or even y’all badly injured/hurt.That’s why it’s important to not text and drive, cause it put people in danger.
Many statistics can prove how texting while driving is a serious problem, and a majority of the drivers do not realize the risks. Other drivers know the dangers and risks of texting while driving, but do not have the appearance of caring. Although the amount of casualties resulting from texting while driving has decreased considerably, there is still a shocking number of deaths and casualties from this issue. The number of casualties and deaths from texting while driving have surpassed the number of drunk driving incidents. Drunk driving deaths a year amount to about 2,700 lives while driving and
The only difference between these two issues is that the driver that uses his phone is fully aware of what he is doing whereas a drunken driver is clearly not sober and probably not fully aware of his actions. Driving drunken is a decision that people often make when they do not have a clear mind, but driving while texting is an unforgivable mistake since one has a clear and sharp mind while making this possibly deadly mistake. Simply, it is an awful habit of people who are not patient enough to text when they are at ease and have enough time. Unfortunately, both cases can result in fatal
Many people admit to texting while driving on a daily basis. Mostly everyone has either received, read, or responded to a text in their lifetime. In 2014, there were 3,179 people killed in an accident involving texting. (“The dangers of texting while driving”) Multiple people have died due to texting while driving or someone who was texting while driving. In the past 10 years texting while driving has been getting out of hand. Texting while driving should be illegal in every state because it can cause a fatal accident, texting while driving is getting worse every year, and it can take the life of an innocent person.
Texting while driving has become a persistent issue in society because of new technologies that make picking up a phone convenient, but also dangerous. Many teens as well as adults have formed a habit of using their cell phones while driving their vehicles. The act of composing, sending or reading a text message interrupts a person’s attention while driving which causes visual, cognitive, and manual distractions. Texting while driving may seem harmless, however it is responsible for serious injuries and even fatalities. Because texting while driving has become an epidemic, society has been forced to come up with solutions which could correct this issue.
This paper will also mention real life experiences with people who have either been the victim or the cause of an accident in which texting while driving was the reason for it. I end my paper with a section in which the purpose of it is to question yourself and others as to if texting while driving is really worth the risk of potentially killing a person or even a whole family. Conclusively, I want a discussion to arise in the future from this paper pertaining to new ideas or innovations that could potentially diminish or even relinquish casualties and damages, both emotional and physical, resulting from texting and driving.
It is a proven fact that texting and driving is worse than drinking and driving. Texting while driving is about 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving intoxicated. Texting while driving there is 11 teens deaths every day. With all of these deaths and injuries you would think the government would do something about it. The government says they want the deaths to stop, and they say it’s tragic when someone passes in a car crash. More people die everyday because of people texting and driving.
