Explain the Concept of Survival of the Fittest.

Answer – “Survival of the fittest” is a phrase that refers to the process by which organisms best adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on their advantageous traits to their offspring (i.e., natural selection).

Explanation:

This phrase is often associated with Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, but it was the English philosopher Herbert Spencer who actually used it in his book Principles of Biology in 1864. Darwin later adopted this phrase in the fifth edition of his book On the Origin of Species.

An example of survival of the fittest is the case of the peppered moth during the industrial revolution in England (18th century). During this revolution, the soot from factories blackened the trees and made it difficult for light-colored moths to camouflage. As a result, dark-colored moths became more common as they were better able to blend in with their surroundings. In other words, they adapted to the situation, and this increased their rates of survival.
