What is the Function of Enzymes?

Answer – Enzymes function as catalysts for the various chemical reactions that take place during biological processes.

Explanation:

Enzymes are found in all cells in the body, and the most of them are proteins.

At any given time in any cell, various chemical reactions are taking place as part of several biological processes. However, the physical conditions in these cells may not be optimal for the reactions. It is here that enzymes step in and act as catalysts (substances that affect the rate and efficiency of chemical reactions without being consumed themselves).

Like all catalysts, there are various ways in which enzymes work. They may alter the temperature and pressure requirements for the chemical reactions to place, or they may lower the overall activation energy needed. The reactants are the substrates which bind with enzymes at specific sites, triggering the reactions. The resultant product is released by the enzyme.

The work of enzymes in the digestive system is particularly notable as they assist in metabolism. Among the several other processes in which enzymes participate are hormone production and DNA replication.
