Photosynthesis:

Photosynthesis is a process through which plants and other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy, which is then released to power the organism's activities through cellular respiration. Some of this chemical energy is stored in carbohydrate molecules like sugars and starches, which are made from carbon dioxide and water, therefore the name photosynthesis.

Most of the time, oxygen is discharged as a waste product, containing three times the chemical energy of carbohydrates. Photoautotrophs are creatures that perform photosynthesis, such as plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Photosynthesis produces and maintains the oxygen concentration of the Earth's atmosphere, as well as providing the majority of the energy required for life on the planet.

Overall reaction of photosynthesis that occurs in plants is as:

6CO2 + 6H2O ----> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
