The Good Guy Supervisor Bernie was promoted from assistant supervisor to supervisor of the employee cafeteria at Port Martin’s College. It was a big move up for him, he had always been a conscientious, hardworking, and loyal employee, who was well liked by his co-workers. He felt that this promotion was well deserved. He knew the operation having worked both in the kitchen and on the line. He figured he would have no problems in the new job. When he took the job, Bernie promised himself that he would never forget how it felt to be a worker and be ordered around, always being told what you are doing wrong, like Debra, the supervisor before him, used to do. Everyone hated her. He was determined to do things differently and not be such an all-fried drill sergeant. He’d be friendly, relaxed, helpful, and people would do their best for him in return. Things, however, are not going quite the way he thought they would as he has had several problems with his team about wearing clean uniforms and wearing hairnets. He is also having problems with Esther, another teammate who has been coming in late several times and he has had to fill in for her on the line. He finally spoke to her about it, but when she told him about her problems with her husband, who brings her to work, he could see how it kept happening and he felt sorry for her, but it is worrying him. Erma, who makes the salad does not always have them ready on time, and yesterday the lettuce was gritty and several customers complained. This morning in trying to quell the issue, Bernie helped her wash the lettuce However, this made her mad. Dan, the head cook , saw the whole thing and laughed at his reaction. “Wise up, Bernie”, he said, “you’re never going to make it this way.” And he lit a cigarette right in front of Bernie after he took the chicken out.
