Question

A compound is 22.76% Carbon, 68.30% Boron and 8.93% Hydrogen
by mass. What is this compound’s empirical formula?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The given percentage of different elements firstly changed into moles by deviding it by atomic masses , then devide all moles by smallest value, we can get empirical formula of compound.

Carbon - 22.76/12 = 1.896

Boron - 68.30/11 = 6.201

Hydrogen - 8.93/1 = 8.93

Now, devide all by lowest value 1.896 -

Carbon - 1.896/1.896 = 1

Boron - 6.201/1.896 = 3.33

Hydrogen - 8.93/1.896 = 4.71
