A moving hammer hits a nail and drives it into a wall. If the hammer hits the nail with the twice speed, how much deeper will the nail be driven ? If it hits with 3 times the speed?

a) 1. According to work energy theorem, change in kinetic energy is equal to the work done by the object. 2. KE of an object is directly proportional to the square of the velocity. 3. Let the hammer first strike the nail with initial speed V. The final speed of hammer is zero. Therefore, the work done is equal to x mv² . This work drives the nail up to a certain distance into the wall. 4. When the velocity is doubled, its kinetic energy increases four times. 5. This time the nail will be driven to a distance 4 times the original. b) Similarly, when the velocity increases 3 times, KE increases 9 times and so the work done. Therefore, the nail will be driven to 9 times the original distance.
