A student reacted 0.3000 g of aluminum with oxygen gas and obtained 0.5333 g of aluminum oxide. Based upon this experimental data, determine the experimental empirical formula of this aluminum oxide.

Expert Answer

Step 1

The empirical formula is the chemical formula of any compound that represents the proportions of each elements that is present in the given compound. It does not show the actual number of element as well as cannot give any information about arrangement of atoms in the formula of compound.

Step 2

 Mass of Al = 0.3000 g

Molar mass of Al = 26.98 g/mol

Calculate the moles of Al:

1 mole Al 0.0111 moles Moles of Al 0.3000 g ^26.98 g of Al

Step 3
  • Mass of aluminum oxide = 0.5333 g
  • Mass of Al  = 0.3000 g
  • Mass of O  =  0.5333 – 0.3000 = 0....
