Question

Compare and contrast bonding molecular orbitals with antibonding molecular orbitals.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The diagram for the molecular orbitals can be given as:

Chemistry homework question answer, step 1, image 1

AO: Atomic Orbitals.

BMO: Bonding Molecular Orbitals.

AMBO: Antibonding Molecular Orbitals.

Step 2

The comparison of the Bonding molecular orbitals and Antibonding molecular orbitals as shown:

Bonding Molecular Orbitals (BMO) Antibonding Molecular Orbitals (ABMO)
  • It is formed by the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) where overlapping of atomic orbitals occur to form a Molecular orbital.
  • Such molecular orbital formed are low in energy and hence, will be stable.
  • In BMO the region of interaction is in between the molecular orbitals to form a bond.
  • More electrons enter in these orbitals therefore, high electron density.
  • Hold two electrons with opposite spin.
  • It is also formed by the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) where overlapping of atomic orbitals occur to form a Molecular orbital.
  • The molecular orbital formed are high in energy and hence, will be less stable.
  • In ABMO the region of interaction is outside the molecular orbital and no bonding in this case.
  • Less electrons enters in these orbitals therefore, low electron density.
  • Hold two electrons with opposite spin.
