Compare and contrast active and passive transport.
Molecules requires sometime extra amount of energy to move and sometime they move freely without any extra effort.
Based upon the requirement of energy, the transportation of molecules is divided into two system. First is an active transport and the another is passive transport.
Active transport:
When an extra amount of energy is required by the molecule for their movement, then it is called active transport.
This extra amount of energy is required because of their movement from low concentration to higher concentration.
Generally in a biological system, protein pump which make use of ATP to generate energy.
Types of active transport-
1. Primary active transport;
In a primary active transport, ATP are utilized for external chemical energy. The protein pump contain binding site for the ATP. The pump is always present on the outer cytosolic cover of the membrane.
2. Secondary active transport;
The movement of ions generate an electrochemical gradient which is utilized for the transportation of a molecules. The most common example is sodium potassium pump in the cell membrane.
Examples of active transport are,
1. Secretion of protein, antibodies, hormones etc.
2. Movement of Ca2+ ion
