Question

Define Heat conduction from warm air to a cold canned drink through the wall of the aluminum can.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The heat conduction from the warm air to a cold canned drink through the wall of the aluminum can is a three-step process. Due to the no-slip condition, the layer of fluid just adjacent to the wall of the aluminum can will be at rest. At a steady-state, the heat transfer rate through convection from the warm air to the layer of warm air adjacent to the can wall will be equal to the conduction between the layer of warm air adjacent to the can wall and the can wall. Hence the first conduction takes place near the outer surface of the wall. The second conduction takes place when the heat is transferred from the outer surface of the can wall to the inner surface of the can wall. The heat is transferred through the thickness of the can wall due to temperature gradient across various layers along the thickness.
