Define the electrostatic precipitators:

Expert Solution
Step 1

To determine: Define the electrostatic precipitators.

Explanation: An electrostatic precipitator is a filtration device that removes suspended dust particles and smoke from flowing gas or exhaust by applying a force of high-voltage electrostatic charge minimally impeding the flow of gases through the unit.

The electrostatic precipitator is very efficient in energy consumption because it applies energy only to those particles that needs to be collected. It takes energy in the form of electric energy.

Step 2

Structure of precipitator and how it works towards cleaning air passing through it and reducing its pollution. The precipitator does not have a complicated structure. It contains thin vertical electrodes (thin metal rods) that are connected by thin wires.

Physics homework question answer, step 2, image 1

Then, there is a row of metal plates which are large in size and vertically arranged. These plates are supposed to be placed at a distance of about 1 to 18 cm apart from each other. As shown in the diagram, air is allowed to pass horizontally. Air first reaches space between electrodes and then it passes through space between plates.
