Question

Define the following terms:
a. ATP synthase
b. submitochondrial particle
c. α,β-hexamer
d. torque
e. rotor

Expert Solution
Step 1

The electron transport chain is the cluster of proteins that transfer electrons through a membrane within the mitochondria to form a gradient of protons that drives the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is used by the cell for metabolic process for cellular function. All of the electrons that enter the transport chain come from NADH and FADH2 molecules produced during the earlier stages of cellular respiration, glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation and the citric acid cycle.

Electron transport is a series of redox reaction in which electrons are rapidly passed from one component to the next. There are four complexes composed of proteins, complex I to complex IV.
