Hormones are the chemical molecules that are synthesized and released by the cells of the endocrine glands. These chemical molecules act as messenger molecules and have a long-term effect on their target cells.

Step 2

When two or more different hormones function to stimulate the same target cell, they can affect each other in three ways –

Synergism – in this condition the different hormones stimulate the same target cell and function together to amplify the effect of each other; for example, the action of testosterone and FSH during the synthesis of sperms.
Antagonism – in this condition two or more hormones have the same target cell, but the stimulation of one nullifies the effect of the other; this interaction helps in maintaining homeostasis; the hormones insulin and glucagon show this kind of interaction.
Permissiveness – in this condition the concentration of one hormone on the target cell determines the effectiveness of the other hormone that function to stimulate a similar target cell; the hormones cortisol and the growth hormone show permissiveness.
