Question

Describe the etiology and changes in blood gases with
acute respiratory failure.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Acute respiratory failure is the defect of respiratory system. It affects the lung where diffusion of gases takes place and leads to breathing related problems.

Step 2

The primary cause of acute respiratory failure is accumulation of fluid in the alveolar sac of lungs. The alveoli serve as a platform for exchange the gases in the lungs. This exchange is disrupted to some extent when the capillaries of alveoli get occluded.

Lungs are unable to efficiently diffuse oxygen, and the release of carbon dioxide into the tissues is also get hindered. The concentration of carbon dioxide increases in the blood plasma. As a result, the binding affinity of hemoglobin lowers for the oxygen. Thus lungs are unable to supply sufficient amount of oxygen to our body. It could either be acute or chronic depending on the severity of infection in lung. Tissues are not able to take up oxygen needed for the metabolism. Acute respiratory failure can cause difficulty in breathing and hypoxia in majority of instances.
