Capacitors are arranged in series have the equivalent capacitance as

1CS=1C1+1C2+...                    ......(1)

The charge on each capacitor in a series combination remain same , however the potential difference on one capacitor may be different than another capacitor.

Where Q is the charge on capacitor

            C is the capacitance

Capacitors are arranged in parallel have the equivalent capacitance as

CP=C1+C2+....                       ......(3)

Each capacitor in parallel arrangement have the same potential difference but different charge.
