Question

How is the nominal or engineering strain found directly from the strain gage?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Engineering strain is defined as ratio of total amount of stretch that a part undergoes or the increase in length to the initial length of the object.

Strain gage is used to measure nominal or engineering strain. Strain gage was first invented by Edward Simmons and Arthur Ruge  in 1938. Basically what we do is that we attach these gauges to the object whose engineering  strain is to be calculated by applying certain adhesives.
