Consider a one-electron atom. The state of electron in the atom is given by four quantum numbers namely, principal quantum number, Azimuthal quantum number, principal quantum number(n), orbital quantum number(l), magnetic quantum number(ml) and spin quantum number(ms).

For every given l state, ml takes value from -l to +l. For every ml, there are two possible spin states, up and down.
