How Thiols are prepared ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Thiols are important compounds of organic chemistry. Thiols are equivalent to alcohols. The only difference is presence of sulfur atom on place of oxygen atom. They have R-S-H as general formula, here R is alkyl chain.

Step 2

Thiols are prepared by various methods. Some of them are explained below-

  • From alkyl halides- thiols are prepared by reaction of SN2 reaction of alkyl halide with a nucleophile SH-.
  • From alcohols- thiols are prepared from alcohol with reaction of H2 S. This reaction takes place in acidic medium to make hydroxyl group a better leaving group.
  • From organolithium compounds- first alkyl lithium react with sulfur and after that reaction with HCl produces thiols.
