C = 42.88% and O = 57.14%

Let the percentages be in grams.

divide these by the atomic masses of C (12 g/mol) and O (16 g/mol)

C = 42.88 g/12 g/mol = 3.6

O = 57.14 g/16 g/mol = 3.6

Divide these by factor 3.6,

C = 3/6/3.6 = 1

O = 3.6/3.6 = 1
