Lymphatic system is a major system of human body regarding immunity. It includes the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland and bone marrow.

Lymphoma is cancer of lymphatic system which may affect the lymphatic system as well as other system. But it is very much treatable depends upon the type of Lymphoma.

Lymphomas are of two types –

  • Hodgkin’s Lymphoma ( Hodgkin's disease )
  • Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

 

  • Hodgkin’s Lymphoma ( Hodgkin's disease ) – It is very common type of lymphoma in that type of cancer, mainly affecting cells are Lymphocytes, a type of White Blood Cells. Theses lymphocytes contains Multinucleated cells called -REED STENBERG CELLS.

Patient may show initial manifestations as- fever, night sweat, weight loss, painless enlarged lymph nodes of neck, under arms or groin, fatigues and itching over the body. Long term -Splenomegaly, hepatomegaly,

Risk group- person affected with Epstein Barr Virus, Family history, Immunosuppressive disorders like HIV/AIDS.

Diagnostic test- confirmed by Lymph Node biopsy

Treatment – Radiotherapy and chemotherapy is effective treatment.

Supportive treatment- physical exercises can help in reducing fatigue.

  • Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma- It is a kind of cancer in which the lymphocytes that is a White blood cells over grow and forms the tumours in allover the body.

Patient may show initial manifestations as-Swollen lymph nodes, abdominal pain,  chest pain, cough, fatigue, fever, weight loss.

It is of two types-

B CELL & T CELLS

Risk Factors- Immunosuppressive medications, viral infections, chemical exposure, old age.

Diagnosis-  Initial assessment, blood and urine examination, CT scan, MRI scan, Bone marrow test, spinal tap or lumbar puncture.

Treatment –  Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, Drug therapy for targeted cell growth,
