Question

Name two examples in which mecahnical energy of a system remains constant.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Mechanical energy of a system is conserved when a ball is thrown upward with some velocity. Initially the ball has only kinetic energy, but as soon as it rises upward, the kinetic energy starts decreasing and gravitational potential energy starts increasing in such a way that the sum omf kinetic energy and the potential energy i.e. mechanical energy remains constant. Hence, total mechanical energy is constant throughout the process.

Also, the total mechanical energy of a spring mass system remains conserved when the mass moves to and fro about the equilibroum position. Kinetic energy and spring energy keeps interchaning in themselves, such that the sum of both i.e. mechanical energy remains conserved.
