Polyisobutylene is one of the components of butyl rubber used for making inner tubes. Is this an
The polymerization is done via either condensation or addition polymerization. In condensation polymer, the monomer units joined together by losing a small molecule as a byproduct and this could be either water or methanol while in the addition polymer, the monomer units are joined together in a straight chain-like structure without losing any small molecule. The PIB (polyisobutylene) is obtained by polymerization of isobutylene with at least two percent of isoprene. The first step of this reaction is the formation of cation and this step is known as the initiation step. After that another molecule of isobutylene adds to the chain and this step is called propagation and repeating this step several times leads to the formation of polyisobutylene. As the addition of monomer unit isobutylene is taking place, thus it is an addition polymer.
