Question

Religion has been both used as a vehicle for agent for change and an obstacle against change. For example, slavery in the U.S. was maintained by white slave owners referencing bible versus defending the practice slavery; at the same time, literate slaves and abolitionists were referencing the same bible to advocate for freedom.

As we have learned, religion offers communities a sense of identity, unity, and purpose. It provides morals and a framework for how to live. It can also be the driver for horrendous evils, what religious scholar Michael Malloy calls "religion gone badly astray."

One way to think about this is as citizen or as a resident of the U.S.. While a land of opportunity and certain liberties not shared in other countries, the U.S. is only now reconciling with it's own historic evils (expulsion, slavery, segregation, discrimination, etc.). Post a reflection on how are we to live in this tension between the beauty and evil done in the name of religion. Why is it important to touch not just on the positive found in religion, but also the negative elements?
