Procedure:
1) In a test tube, place 0.3 ml of each sample, 5 mL of 10% NAOH, and 0.4 ml of benzene sulfonyl
chloride. Plug the tube with cock stopper and shake the mixture vigorously for 5 minutes. Take
note of the result.
2) Test the misture with litmus paper. Make sure that it is alkaline (add few drops of 4M KOH until
it becomes so). Let it stand for 10 minutes. Add 6M HCI dropwise while stirring until acidic. Take
note of results.
3) If a precipitate is formed, collect it by filtration or decantation. Test for solubility of the
precipitate in 3 ml of 2.5M NaOH. Heat to 50 °C. Shake the tube well for 3 minutes.
