Question

Show mechanism for Friedel–Crafts Alkylation Using a 3° Carbocation ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Friedel-Crafts alkylation:

This is an example of electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction.

When alkyl halide in presence of Lewis acid catalyst like AlCl3 ,BF3, FeCl3 or ZnCl2reacts with aromatic compounds and form alkyl substituted aromatic compounds.

AlCl3 forms a complex with alkyl halide and due to this the electrophilicity of alkyl halides increases.

Alkylation reactions undergo rearrangements also.
