Kepler gave the laws of planetary motion but could not give the theory to explain the motion of planets. Later Newton used Kepler's third law of planetary motion to develop the law of universal gravitation which shows the cause of the motion of planets is the gravitational force exerted by the sun on them.

Kepler’s third law states that the square of the orbital period of a planet is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of its orbit.
