Question

Suppose a block of mass 25.0kg rests on a horizontal plane, and the coefficient of static friction between the surfaces is 0.220. (a) What is the maximum possible static frictional force that could act on the block?_____N (b)What is the actual static frictional force that acts on the block if an external force of 25.0N acts horizontally on the block?_____N

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given in question - Mass of block(M) = 25.0 kg

                                 Friction cofficient (μ) = 0.220

To find -  (a) What is the maximum possible static frictional force that could act on the block?

                (b)What is the actual static frictional force that acts on the block if an external force of 25.0N acts horizontally on the block?

Solution - Step1: Here we will solve part(a) of the question.

                 As we know that maximum possible static frictional force is given by (Fmax) =μN......(1)

                  Here, N - Normal force = M×g = 25.0×9.8 = 245 N

                  Putting the value of N in equation(1) we will get -

                                                                                                            Fmax = 0.220×245 = 53.9 Newton

Hence,  the maximum possible static frictional force that could act on the block is 53.9 Newton
