German sportswear company Adidas shrugged off Chinese calls in March for a boycott of its
products and raised its 2021 sales forecast on Friday, saying it expects upcoming sporting events to
drive strong demand for new products. Adidas said it now sees sales growing at a high-teens
percentage rate in 2021, compared with a March forecast for mid-to-high teens growth, with a jump
of around 50 percent expected in the second quarter.
It said the acceleration would be driven by new products such as Ultraboost running shoes that are
designed to be recycled, as well as big sports events like the European soccer championship and
the Copa America.
Shares in Adidas, which had fallen in recent weeks on concerns about sales in China, were up 7
percent at 07:28 GMT, the biggest gain on the German blue-chip index. Shares in rival Puma were
also up 1.8 percent. “A slight upping of 2021 organic growth guidance suggests that concerns
around the ... damage to Chinese prospects appear overblown,” said Jefferies analyst James Grzinic.
Western brands including Adidas, Nike and Puma faced online attacks in China in March over past
statements saying they would not source cotton from Xinjiang after reports of human rights abuses
against Uyghur Muslims. Beijing denies any such abuses.
Adidas did not directly mention the issue on Friday, beyond saying its new outlook took into account
the geopolitical situation as well as the impact of prolonged lockdowns in Europe and industry-wide
supply chain challenges. However, it did say its sales jumped 156 percent in greater China in the
first quarter, a year after the coronavirus pandemic hit there. At the end of the first quarter, 89
percent of the company’s stores had reopened around the world.
Puma said last month it expected a consumer backlash against Western brands in China and
congestion at ports to hit its sales, though it gave an upbeat outlook for 2021. Adidas said firstquarter sales rose 20 percent to €5.268 billion ($6.35 billion), ahead of analysts’ average forecast
of €5 billion, while net income from continuing operations jumped to €502 million. The company
stuck to its forecast for 2021 net income from continuing operations to rise to €1.25-1.45 billion.

- US based Google the leading Internet search engine company in the world started providing its services in China in 2000. Though Google soon became the leading search engine in the Chinese market, it started losing its market share in couple of years.By early 2004, users in China had thought that Google was unreliable and started using alternative search engines. Elliot Schrage, Vice-president, Global Communications and Public Affairs of Google said that Google was seven times slower than its rival Baidu and Google itself was not happy with the way its services were being operated in the country. In China, the Internet content was heavily censored by the government and users searching on Google's site experienced inordinate delays. By 2005, Chinese search engine company Baidu emerged as the leading internet search company in China. To compete with Baidu, Google decided to launch a Chinese website - www.google.cn and agreed to censor its content. Analysts opined that with Internet users…Kolkata-based FMCG major Emami has embarked on various distribution initiatives and rural expansion drive to boost growth in the current fiscal, its Chairman said. Addressing shareholders at the company's annual general meeting, he said in the first quarter of the current financial year, the company continued to face market challenges due to the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic -- from mid-April on-wards. Local lock downs and restrictions in various states severely affected both urban and rural regions. In the current financial year, company has embarked on various distribution initiatives to drive further growth. We embarked on a focused rural expansion drive under Project Khoj through expansion of rural footprint in the top 4 potential rural contributing states in FY22.To augment the current distribution strength, Emami outlined a "clear strategy to drive growth aggressively in the rural market", adding digitalisation of rural sales force was completed successfully last fiscal. It…Although the market is booming, it is characterized by intense competition and rapid technological development. Ericsson – the manufacturer on mobile phone handsets – has recently seen its market share drop within this growing market. These difficulties are largely attributed to the delay in launching a key product (The T28). The company is quoted as stating that the T28 was nearly a year late and that they had to cancel the T36 because it had only a short market life. Such delays caused Ericsson to miss out on demand for low-cost handsets aimed at the expanding pre-pay mobile phone market. From the SCENARIO above discuss the activities at the commercialization stage of the product life cycle and their implication to Ericsson. Explain Strategy options that Ericsson may have pursued. Why is the technological environment such a dramatic force in today's market? Support your arguments with the scenario above.
