The retina of a human eye can detect light when radiant energy incident on it is at least 4.0 × 10-17 J. How many photons of 485 nm wavelength light does this correspond to?

Expert Answer

Step 1

Given:

Light energy detectable = 4.0 × 10-17 J.

Wavelength of photons = 485 nm

We need to find the number of photons.

Step 2

E = hc/λ

= 6.625 X 10-34 X 3 x 108 / 485 X 10 -9

= 0.040 X 10-17 J

E retina = 4 X10-17 J

No . of photons = 4 X10-17 ...
