3. In this lab we will construct a dichotomous key to distinguish bacterial species, based on the
characteristics we discover. In a dichotomous key each step in identification has two possible descriptions
("di-“) about a bacterium's characteristics. For example, is the bacteria Gram positive or Gram negative?
Through a series of these dichotomous choices the bacterium of interest can be distinguished. Using the
dichotomous keys in Chapter 47 of your lab manual, determine the species name of each of the following
bacteria, based on their descriptions.
a. This bacterium is a gram-negative cocci. It can ferment glucose, meaning it is positive for
fermentation of glucose test. It can also reduce nitrate. What is it?
Escherichia coli
b. This bacterium is a gram-positive rod. It is negative for the catalase reaction, but does produce gas
from glucose. What is it?
