Question

What are the physical properties of the three stereoisomers of tartaric acid ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Stereoisomers which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other are termed as enantiomers.

If two stereoisomers are not mirror images of each other and are non-superimposable they are termed as diastereomers.

Enantiomers are equal in their physical properties apart from optical rotation, as both enantiomers would rotate in plane-polarized light by equal amounts but in opposite directions.

Diastereomers would however be different in their individual physical properties.
