Question

What is the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous azeotropic distillation?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The difference between the homogeneous and heterogeneous azeotropic distillation are to be mentioned.

Step 2

AZEOTROPIC DISTILLATION:-

1. Here, an azeotrope is formed which helps in separating the components from a mixture.

2. The azeotrope must be formed before the start of the distillation.

3. The component separated here has the same chemical composition in the liquid as well as the vapor phase.

4. Relative volatility is the main driving force here.

A mixture of acetic acid and water is separated by the azeotropic distillation process. Here, an ester is added as an azeotrope which forms a mixture with water and leaves at the top of the column while acetic acid leaves at the bottom.
