What is the freezing point of a solution which contains 89.8 g of ethylene glycol (62.07 g/mol)  which is a nonvolatile non electrolyte,  in 500.0 g of water. For H2O   Kf = 1.86oC/m.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Depression in in freezing point ( ∆Tf ) :-

When a non volatile solute is added to a pure solvent , its freezing point decreases .

If T° is freezing point of pure solvent and T is freezing point of solution then the difference (T° - T) is called depression in freezing point (∆Tf)

∆Tf = T° - T

Experimentally it was found that , ∆Tf is directly proportional to molality of solution

∆Tf = Kf × molality

∆Tf = Kf × (w/m) × 1000/W

Kf = freezing point depression constant

w = mass of solute

m = molar mass of solute

W = mass of solvent
