When you use the standard deviation as a measure of variation, what is the reference point?

**Standard deviation:**

The standard deviation indicates by how much each observation differs from a central point represented by the mean. Standard deviation is the square root of the variance. In general, the variance increases with the increase in the distances between the individual observations and the mean of the data set.

The general formula for sample standard deviation is,

Standard deviation *s *= SQRT(sum of (*xi* –*x-*bar)2/*n*-1)

**Procedure to find standard deviation:**
