- The dipole moments of furan and tetrahydrofuran are in the same direction. One compound has a dipole moment of 0.70 D, and the other has a dipole moment of 1.73 D. Which is which?Consider the compounds 1-pentanol,CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-OH, melting point -78C boiling point 138C, MW=88.15. 1,6-hexanediol ,HO-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-OH, mp 42C,bp=250C.MW=118.18. The compound 1,6-hexanediol is more soluble in water than 1-pentanol is. This is because 1,6-hexanediol.... 1) has more carbon atoms 2)has a higher molecular weight 3)has more -OH groups 4)is a solid at room temperatureThe electric dipole moment of methyl benzene (toluene) is0.40 D. (a) Estimatethedipolemomentsofthethreedimethylbenzenes (xylenes). (b) Also estimate the dipole moments of (i) 1.2.3-trimethylbenzene, Ii i) 1 ,2.4-trimethylbenzene. and (ii i) 1 ,3,5-trimethylbenzene. (c) Which of the values can you be sure about?
- I know that the answer to this question is 60, but I am struggling to understand why. Could somebody please draw this out for me 3-dimensionally or explain to me in detail why this is the case? One explanation I've heard is that it is because when the dihedral angle between the two methyl groups is 60, the molecular dipole moment between the two chlorine atoms is the smallest, therefore the answer is 60. This explanation is meaningless to me - that does not even seem to be what the question is asking. Is it a poorly-worded question? i need good explanationAcetonitrile (CH3CN) has resonance at 1.97 ppm, whereas methyl chloride (CH3Cl) has resonance at 3.05 ppm, even though the dipole moment of acetonitrile is 3.92 D and that of methyl chloride is only 1.85 D. The larger dipole moment for the cyano group suggests that the electronegativity of this group is greater than that of the chlorine atom. Explain why the methyl hydrogens on acetonitrile are actually more shielded than those in methyl chloride, in contrast with the results expected on the basis of electronegativitycompound HO at 6 and NO2 at 1
- p-chloro nitro benzene has less dipole moment (2.4 D) than p-nitro toluene (4.4 D). Why?Azulene, an isomer of naphthalene, has a remarkably large dipole moment for a hydrocarbon (μ = 1.0 D). Explain, using resonance structures.Rank the following groups in order of decreasing priority. −Cl, −CH3, −SH, −OH
- In light of the nitrogen rule mentioned in Problem 12-17, what is the molecular formula of pyridine, M+=79?Propanal, an aldehyde with the formula CH3CH2CHO, and n-propylamine have identical molecular weights (59 amu) and identical boiling points (49 C) Which molecule do you expect to be more polar and why?1,4-Pentadiene (CH2=CH-CH2-CH=CH2) is a liquid at room temperature and has a density of 0.66 g/mL and molar mass of 68.12 g/mol. In a laboratory experiment, 3.80 mL of this compound was treated with 4.80 mL of conc. H2SO4 (100% w/w; molar mass 98.08 g/mol). Note that the density of conc. H2SO4 is 1.84 g/mL. The resulting sulfate ester was then treated with 1.20 mL of water (molar mass 18.02 g/mol) affording, after work- up, 2,4-pentanediol (molar mass 104.15 g/mol) as the crude product. The crude product was then purified by simple distillation, which yielded 2.00 g of pure product. What is the theoretical yield of 2,4-pentanediol expressed in grams? Show calculations. What is the percentage yield of pure 2,4-pentanediol?
