Question

I accidently sent this under computer engineering... that's how well my night is going lmfao

Consider the tests that aided you to confirm your unknown. Write chemical equations for those reactions between your unknown using YOUR structure and the readgents used that gave you a positive test.

I confirmed my unknown as 2-methyl-2-propanol

I'm getting a headach just looking at this problem so I am going to attach the two tests from my lab notebook that came up as positive (alcohol)

Thank you so much

Test # 8: Lucas Test for alcohol type:
Time is a factor here so get ready to start your watch. 9 drops of the unknown is added to
25 drops of the Lucas reagent (CAUTION: Reagent is corrosive and toxic!). The contents
are mixed and the test tube is allowed to stand, with time noted. The appearance of a
cloudy suspension (gelatinous) due to formation of the alkyl halide is a positive test. The
time of formation of the suspension is the key factor.
Discussion: Tertiary alcohols react rapidly within 1 minute. Secondary (2") alcohols take
up to 5-6 minutes, and primary (1°) alcohols do not react within this time frame. The zinc
chloride in the reagent catalyzes the reaction.

Test # 7: Ceric Nitrate Test for alcohols
If tests 3, 4, and 6 were negative, this test is used to reveal an alcohol. 3 drops of the
unknown are added to 7-8 drops of the reagent, ceric nitrate in a 4-inch test tube, with
shaking. The rapid appearance of a red color, due to complexation of the cerium (IV) ion,
with the alcohol, is a positive test.
Discussion: This test works for most alcohols up to 10-C alcohols. If your test result is
positive for alcohols, proceed to Test # 8 (Lucas Test) to determine the type of alcohol.
