Expt. 8: VOLUMETRIC DETERMINATION OF CALCIUM AS OXALATE
Sample preparation: the sample is a solution containing a known weight of CaCO, dissolved in
6N or 3N HCI and diluted to a definite volume. Aliquot portions are given
as unknown samples.
Procedure for Analysis:
Dilute the unknown sample to 250 ml with distilled water (DW) and then 10.00 ml aliquot
is taken for analysis.
1. Dilute the 10.00 ml aliquot to about 200 ml with DW.
2. Heat the solution to 60° – 80°C and then add 4-5 drops of methyl orange indicator.
3. Dissolve 1-1.5 grams ammonium oxalate, (NH,)½C204, in 50 ml of DW and then add to the
sample solution.
4. Bring the solution to a boil and then add 6N NH,OH SLOWLY from a pipet until the indicator
shows a change of color. Stir vigorously during the addition.
5. Allow the solution to stand for at least 30 minutes, but NO longer than 1 hour before filtration
6. Filter, first by decantation through a special type of filter paper.
7. Wash with 10 ml portions of COLD (chilled) DW, adding each portion to the precipitation
beaker (1 liter) and pouring from this to the filtering medium. Drain each portion of wash
before adding the next.
8. After the 4th washing, test a portion of the filtrate for chloride ions using a drop of HNO, and
a drop of AGNO3. Continue washing until only a faint cloudiness (or much better = CLEAR
solution) is obtained. Discard filtrate and washings.
9. Make a hole in the apex of the filter paper and wash the precipitate with a stream of HOT DW
into the precipitation beaker (1 liter).
10. Pour a mixture of 9.0 ml concentrated H;SO, and 150 ml of DW over the filter paper. Wash
thoroughly with HOT DW.
11. Heat the solution to 80° – 90°C to dissolve the precipitate.
12. Titrate AT ONCE with Std. KMNO, solution until endpoint is reached.
