You discover a new allele of a gene important for tail formation in mice. WT mice have long tails, but mice heterozygous for the allele have short tails. When you cross two heterozygous mice together, you obtain a 2:1 ratio of short-tailed mice to long-tailed mice. None of the short-tailed progeny are homozygous. What type of allele results in short tails?A) dominant negative alleleB) temperature-sensitive alleleC) lethal alleleD) partially dominant alleleE) incompletely penetrant allele

Expert Answer

Step 1

Homozygous is the condition in which the individual has two same alleles for a gene. In heterozygous condition two different alleles are possessed by a gene. In the given experiment a cross is carried out between heterozygous individuals and the results are 2:1, 2 short tailed mice and one long tailed mice.

Step 2

Lethal allele is the correct answer.

Lethal alleles disturb the function of a gene which in turn results in change in genotypic and phenotypic functions of a cell. Lethal allele showed its effect even in presence of dominant allele (for long tail), thus the progeny having heterozygous genotype are short tailed, the individuals having homozygous tall individuals have long tails.

Step 3

Option A is incorrect.

Dominant negative alleles result in change in gene product in respect to wild allele. Dominant allele shows its effect in only heterozygous are dominant homozygous condition. The individual carrying homozygous recessive alleles do not show the trait.

Option B is incorrect

Temperature-sensitive alleles are influenced by temperature. These alleles behave differently in different range of temperature. In the given experiment the alleles are not sensitive to temperature thus this option is incorrect.
