Mr. Phillip Johnson’s lung cancer was first discovered on a chest x-ray taken for other reasons. An admitted smoker for 18 years, the only respiratory symptom he reported was a persistent, mild, dry “smoker’s cough.” As a second thought, he mentioned that he had noticed a decrease in his usual “healthy” appetite and subsequently had lost a few pounds. Finally, he admitted to fatigue just getting through his daily routine. Further diagnostic studies indicated an 8 mm solitary pulmonary nodule identified as small cell lung cancer (SCLC). SCLC occurs almost exclusively in smokers; it has a rapid growth rate, and metastasizes early in the disease process. Mr. Johnson is scheduled for more diagnostic testing to determine the stage of the cancer and to detect metastatic lesions.
