A popular brand of cola contains 6.50 g of carbon dioxide dissolved in 1.00 L of soft drink. If the evaporating carbon dioxide is trapped in a cylinder at 1.00 atm and 20.0°C, what volume does the gas occupy?

Formula to calculate the volume is,

V=mRTMP

• m is the mass of the carbon dioxide dissolved
• R  is the gas constant
• T is the temperature
• P is the pressure
• M is the molar mass

Substitute 6.50 g for m, 1.0 atm for P, 20οC for T, 44.0 g/mol for M and 8.31Jmol-1K-1 for R in the above equation to get V.

V=(6.50g)(8.31Jmol-1K-1)(20οC)(44
