The atomic number of carbon is 6 and thus, has six electrons, four is present in the valence electrons and two is present in the inner orbit.

A carbon atom can form bonds to a maximum of four other atoms such as carbon itself (catenation property) and other elements (oxygen, hydrogen). The bond formed between the carbon and the other element is covalent bond.
