The electrons present in the outermost shell in an atom are called valence electrons and the shell is called the valence shell. These electrons determine the chemical activity of an atom or element. The valence shell is different for different elements and depends on the number of electrons present in its atom. An atom with a complete valence shell is chemically stable. In order to complete their valence shells, atoms combine together to form chemical bonds by transferring the electrons or by sharing them.

Explanation of Solution

Chemical bonds are formed when the atoms combine chemically. They are formed by the interaction between the electrons of different atoms that react with each other. Ionic, hydrogen, and covalent bonds are some of the common types of chemical bonds.

Atoms with one, two, or three valence electrons tend to donate electrons to complete their valence shell, while those with four electrons prefer to share. Atoms with more than four valence electrons either share their electrons or gain the electrons from other atoms to attain stability.
