Textbook Problem

It is known that the natural soil at a construction site has a void ratio of 0.92. At the end of compaction, the in-place void ratio was found to be 0.65. If the moisture content remains unchanged, determine the following:a. Percent decrease in the total volume of the soil due to compactionb. Percent increase in the field dry unit weightc. Percent change in the degree of saturation

(a)

To determine

Calculate the percent decrease in the total volume of the soil due to compaction.

Explanation

Given information:

The void ratio of a soil at construction site (e1) is 0.92.

The void ratio at the end of compaction (e2) is 0.65.

Calculation:

Calculate the void ratio (e) using the relation.

e=VvVs

Here, Vv is the volume of voids and Vs is the volume of the solids.

eVs=Vv (1)

Calculate the volume of voids (Vv) using the relation.

Vv=VVs

Here, V is the total volume.

Substitute VVs for Vv in Equation (1).

eVs=VVse=VVs1e+1=VVs (2)

Calculate the volume of the soil at a construction site (V1) as shown below.

Substitute 0.92 for e in equation (2).

0.92+1=V1VsV1=1

(b)

To determine

Calculate the percent increase in the field dry unit weight.

(c)

To determine

Calculate the percent change in degree of saturation.
